Band Camp

Band Camp

Nestled in amongst the pines, backing onto the local golf course, 700m away from Awapuni/Watson and the beach, Band Camp is the pefect place to chill out, away from the hussle and bustle of the main camps.

Band Camp campers still have access to the other BW camps to visit friends and to all the shows at the Sound Shell.

The camp is set on the grounds of the Te Kuri a Tuatai Marae and the camp project is used as a means to raise funds in order to rebuild the Marae that was burnt down 50 years ago. BW employs members of the Marae to perform most of the opperating functions of the camp and they help to provide a friendly and safe atmosphere for their guests.

The final places at Band Camp are filling up fast so hit the book page to lock in a spot!!!

RHYTHM & VINES ANNOUNCE SECOND OF THREE PROGRAMME LINE-UPS

RHYTHM & VINES are pleased to announce the second of three outstanding programme installments for 2009. These additions to the first stellar line-up combine international heavy-weights and local legends which enhance the diverse and exciting programme.

Fame and success is something which few artists of recent times have enjoyed quite to the same level as MOBY, who has garnered mass critical acclaim and sold millions of albums worldwide. Headlining major festivals, and touring with everyone from Aphex Twin to Red Hot Chilli Peppers in previous years, MOBY is set to return to New Zealand to play RHYTHM & VINES for the first time since the release of his new album Wait For Me.

UK chart toppers EDITORS hit RHYTHM & VINES on the back of the release of new album In This Light And On This Evening available in October. The Mercury Prize-nominated group have affirmed themselves as one of the most vital guitar bands of recent times, and their live show is not to be missed.

Bootlegging kings 2MANYDJs (LIVE) - the alter egos of Belgian groove-gurus Stephen and David Dewaele from Soulwax –are set to perform a cracking LIVE set this year at R&V. Joining them in the line-up from Australia on the dance tip will be AJAX (Sweat It Out), known for mixing it up in style, plus Modular’s BANG GANG (Doom & Hoodrat) and DJ EMERSON TODD.

Making their debut New Zealand performance are UK trio FUTURE OF THE LEFT, who have won over an army of fans with albums Curses and the recently released Travels With Myself And Another. FUTURE OF THE LEFT throw down the gauntlet for what rock music should sound like, and their music is melodically brutal and uncompromising in its lyrical bite.

New York band WHITE RABBITS also hit NZ for the first time, yet are no strangers to the international festival circuit. With previous stints at Lollapalooza and Glastonbury, WHITE RABBITS will bring their dark pop essence to RHYTHM & VINES this year.

From closer to home, OPENSOULS are set to inject some soul to this year’s festival, while DANE RUMBLE is set to bring the noise with his fresh new sound, post-Fastcrew. bNet favourite DICTAPHONE BLUES brings an indie-pop sentiment to the programme, while local psychedelic/experimental darlings AN EMERALD CITY return home from Berlin primed for RHYTHM & VINES on the back of a swag of European tours and festivals.

Bringing their DJ prowess and rounding off the second instalment are TRUTH, RUGGED TECHNIQUES, NICK D, CAM ROBERTSON, DEAN CAMPBELL, ALEX BULL, ANGE, BEAT MAFIA, LOTION and QUAY STREET SOCIAL CLUB DJs.

These acts join a top-notch first announcement of artists which include EMPIRE OF THE SUN (AUS), MAJOR LAZER (US), MIDNIGHT YOUTH, KRAFTY KUTS (UK), STATE OF MIND (LIVE feat. PNC) and LCD SOUNDSYSTEM DJ SET (US). Stay tuned for an exciting third programme instalment to round off the RHYTHM & VINES line-up in the coming weeks!

For festival goers who are keen to make the most of their New Years experience and stay close to the action, RHYTHM & VINES are opening a new On-Site Campground nestled in amongst the vines of the stunning Waiohika Estate. Campers can live and breathe R&V throughout the festival period, easily moving between their camp site and back to the crowd– all within minutes. With features including 24 hour security, hot showers, Wi-Fi access and a free shuttle to and from Gisborne, On-Site Camping at RHYTHM & VINES will be in hot demand this year. Booking details can be found under Accommodation via HYPERLINK "http://www.rhythmandvines.co.nz" www.rhythmandvines.co.nz.

RHYTHM & VINES are pleased to welcome some fantastic partners on board for 2009. Summit Lager, Jagermeister and Bulmer Harvest Cider return to the festival and are joined by Coke Zero and Yellowglen as key sponsors. This year's supporters are really getting behind the total festival experience and will be adding new zones and fun twists.

The Jagermeister Zone was a definite highlight in 2008, and returns this year better than ever with a state of the art sound system and programme. Festival goers can also experience an ice-cold cider in the Harvest Cider House whilst taking in the panoramic view.

For those who are sick of mosh-pits and queuing for portaloos, ticket upgrades will be made available for a more luxurious festival experience in the stunning Yellowglen Lounge overlooking the main RHYTHM & VINES arena. Luxury attended toilets, cocktail bar, delicious wines and cheese from the Gisborne region, complimentary Yellowglen bubbly on arrival and the best view in the house are just some of its features. Upgrades start at $60 per day, or $150 for 3 days and go on sale shortly. Further details regarding features of the Yellowglen Lounge can be found at HYPERLINK "http://www.rhythmandvines.co.nz" www.rhythmandvines.co.nz.

Other partners joining RHYTHM & VINES are Pump, who will be pimping out the waterslide; Mother Energy (to keep you partying all night); and official technology partner, Panasonic, who will be capturing all the magic festival moments on camera. Further partners will be announced shortly.

RHYTHM & VINES SECOND LINE-UP ANNOUNCEMENT

Moby (USA), Editors (UK), 2manydj's (LIVE) (BEL), Future of the Left (UK), Opensouls,

More BW Acts Announced

Lets get this party started!!

Finally its here... the final release of headline acts taking the stage at the JIM BEAM Sound Shell at BW for some pre and post Rhythm and Vines gigs!!

Flying in from Wellington with killer tunes & visuals to rock the party, once again, are Kiwi favourites Rhombus.

With the release of their 3rd self-titled album late last year to glowing reviews, Rhombus are gearing up to throw down the fresh cuts for BW '09!

Rhombus will bring their iconic dub & bass sound to BW '09, featuring the soulful vocal styles of Lisa Tomlins & MC Antsman, along with the dub stylings of Simon Rycroft, Thomas Voyce, Koa Williams, plus Peter Hill on Guitar and guest.

With numerous tours of New Zealand, Japan and Australia, this well-oiled machine is set to ignite the camping dancefloor with a mixture of brand new tunes, old favourites, and a special visual show, all designed to power-up the party!

Recently voted number 5 DJ act in Australia and number 2 in Queensland, The Stafford Brothers (of Ministry of Sound fame) are coming back to their native NZ to lay it down for y'all. As we said, originally from NZ, this electro house duo have been kicking it across the ditch, making some serious waves as sell out headliners in every state around the country. But the boys haven't just stopped with Australia. Multiple tours to Ibiza and main room club sets in venues across Miami, Las Vegas, London, Manchester, Dubai and Spain's Malaga and Marbella have meant the Stafford sound has already successfully infiltrated overseas markets.

Joining the Staffords will be Timmy Trumpet. Bascially Timmy has a trumpet, through which air is blown and sound comes out whilst electro house music is played in the background. If you didn't catch him at BW last year you may have seen him across the ditch at GOOD VIBRATIONS, SUMMAFIELDAYZE or FUTURE MUSIC Festivals, wearing a wife beater singlet, a pair of thongs and a 2003 haircut. Having multiple WORLD WIDE tours under his horn, including performances at IBIZA’S PACHA (voted No.2 best club in the world, Dance Music Awards 04/05) and LONDON’S MINISTRY OF SOUND (No.3), Timmy has stamped his name as arguably one of Australia’s best DJ side kicks.

Fast becoming Australia's number 1 female DJ is Helena, a British born music junkie who began organising raves, throwing parties, DJ’ing and promoting throughout her turbulent school years. Her energetic, upfront, “no holds barred” style; makes electro, tech, fidget, house, tribal and techno melt into one. Helena’s presence on stage is revered by all including Australia’s biggest dance act - The Potbelleez. “She has a talent that has to be seen to be believed.” It's really no wonder the offers are coming thick and fast for this sassy Bristolian misfit.

His commitment and passion for the music was instrumental in advocating Dan Aux as one of the most talented of Australia's young DJs. Now based in Auckland, New Zealand. Closely tied to Sydney dance label Vacation records as one half of Shopliftas, Dan's time is split between music production & remixes aswell as his weekly radio show on George FM. you see Dan Auxbehind the decks you know there is some kind of magic happening. You can see the experience supporting artists - Krafty Kuts, Z-Trip, Plump DJs, Freq Nasty, Aquasky, Ltj Bukem, Kid Kenobi, Mylo, Stanton Warriors, Shapeshifter, Kosheen, Pendulum. (The list goes on...)

Six60 …these boys are taking the south by storm. Although they are in the exposure stage at present, their young, enthusiastic and high energy approach has helped them obtain a staunch following that constantly continues to grow. Adistinct ability to empower crowds has put their live act in very high demand and is an experience not to be missed. With their unique combination of roots/drum and bass, six60have set themselves aside as true performers as well as talented musicians.

These acts join already released artists:

The Black Seeds, The Potbelleez (AUS), Katchafire, Concord Dawn, Tommy Trash (AUS), Thirtyeightfourty

TICKETS NOW ON SALE FOR YELLOWGLEN BUBBLY LOUNGE

RHYTHM & VINES are pleased to announce the exciting third instalment of artists set to complement a high calibre international and local programme for 2009. The following acts will be joining over 50 stellar acts already announced who are set to ignite the three-day festival from 28 December – 31 December.

Australian multi-platinum recording artists JOHN BUTLER TRIO are no stranger to the touring circuit and their smooth roots, blues and rock-based grooves have made them a firm favourite for many New Zealanders. Led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler, the trio have previously played iconic festivals such as Fuji Rock Festival, Glastonbury, Coachella and Lollapalooza to rave reviews. JOHN BUTLER TRIO are set to impress with their first ever appearance at RHYTHM & VINES this year, off the back of a brand new single from a forthcoming album due out next year.

Encompassing dub, ragga, funk and hip hop, Mercury Prize nominated ROOTS MANUVA (aka Rodney Smith) will be bringing his lyrical wonderment and silly genius all the way from South London to RHYTHM & VINES this year. ROOTS MANUVA has led the way for other UK artists such as The Streets and Dizzee Rascal, and his influence has even stretched to bands such as The Arctic Monkeys, who are on record as saying that ROOTS MANUVA’s 2001 album ‘Run Come Save Me’ was almost all they listened to whilst recording their debut album. ROOTS MANUVA’s recent album ‘Slime & Reason’ possesses the kind of of freewheeling, reggae-drenched tunes that make it the perfect sound for summer, and RHYTHM & VINES 2009.

Scottish band BIFFY CLYRO has been critically acclaimed by international media and fans alike, and will make their New Zealand debut at RHYTHM & VINES. United by a love of underground, experimental rock and post-hardcore bands, BIFFY CLYRO have honed their own unique sound, from a mind boggling mix of off-kilter tempos, itchy, unpredictable guitars, soulful choruses and feral screams, to a rich and complex take on rock anthems. Their 2007 album ‘Puzzle’ shot them to mainstream success, leading BIFFY CLYRO to play Wembley Stadium with Muse, headlining the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury and gigging with The Rolling Stones. Their well-toured and electric live show will definitely be one not to be missed.

Emerging from the mist and shadows of the blogosphere, few producers or DJ's have managed to simultaneously create insane amounts of both hype and frustration as UK’s FAKE BLOOD - an alias used by DJ Touche, also half of The Black Ghosts. Meticulously constructed releases have popped many an electro-diehard's blood vessels making FAKE BLOOD one of the most enigmatic acts of recent times. With infectious rave melodies like his debut original ‘Mars,’ and ‘Blood Splashing (Fake Blood Theme)’, plus a swathe of killer remixes from artists as diverse as Armand Van Helden, Bonde Do Role, The Kills, and the legendary Underworld, FAKE BLOOD is sure to be the name on everyone's lips at RHYTHM & VINES.

Minimal and Tech house DJ JOEL ARMSTRONG will be making his way to Gisborne this year from his home base of Vancouver, Canada. Over the last five years, Joel's name has become associated with quality electronic music, having established a strong following with his creative productions. He moves clubbers with his loopy grooves behind the decks, from rocking international summer festivals and raves, to popular club nights and residencies. Keeping on the dance tip, BONDI HOUSE DJ’s from Australia are also set to bring the noise, so expect tight sets from both these acts this year at R&V!

From the local scene, hot up and coming Wellington band FAMILY CACTUS will be joining the bill, off the back of rave live reviews across the country and their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Come Howling’. Other top notch kiwi artists include Dunedin-based band SIX60, who bring their fresh kiwi fusion of roots, reggae, hip hop, dub step, and drum and bass; MIKEY HAVOC, AROHA, BRAZILBEAT SOUNDSYSTEM, VITAL SOUNDSYSTEM, BLACKBIRD, LOGAN BAKER, R.I.A., SNOWY, DJ ROBBA AND MC DREADEYE, FLEX, THIRTYEIGHTFOURTY, ELM, SHIRTPANTS, +1, and JONAS.

Paint Ball @ BW -- No Shit!!

Everyone Enjoy's A Little Chaos. Pop a cap in your neighbour's a***

BW now has paintball on the sand. Challenge your mates to a game on the beach. Huge, fully enclosed arenas complete with bunkers to hide behind and shoot it up with your mates. Settle any any camp argument or just be the best campsite at BW in one of the world's fastest growing sports.

The Beach Zone

This arena will be one of the key focal points of BW throughout the entire week of the festival. The zone is located on the beautiful town beach, directly opposite BW's largest camp (Watson) and last year hosted 1000's of people daily.

Picture an area abuzz with activity. There is music, sun, surf, sand, dancing, sports, sunbathing, swimming, surfing, bikinis, board shorts, cabana huts.....ice cold Pump for sale!!!!

Beach Stage

The area features a stage hosting a wide selection of DJ talent, crossing over a multitude of musical genres. The music sets the tone for the area as one of the prime places to hang out in Gisborne over the week. The beauty of this zone is that it is not exclusive to campers and is an area where general public come to mingle with their friends staying at BW.

Sports Arena

We are placing a huge emphasis on beach sports this year with:

Volley Ball

Soccer

Touch rugby

Frisbee

Tug of war

Sand Castle building

And more

Campers will be able to enter daily competitions in these activities or just enjoy casually, out side of competition hours.

Cabanas

The area will feature a series of tropical style cabana huts, constructed from driftwood and palm trees. These will be spread out along the zone and will act as shade and chill out zones away from the powerful Gissy summer sun!!!

A central cabana hut will be selling ice cold drinks to the thirsty beach goers throughout the day light hours to insure everyone stays refreshed and on their game.

Tow-at Surf Comp

On the morning of the 28th the water area within the zone will play host to NZ's only Tow-At Competition. The comp is an invitation-only one-day event with 12 of the countries hottest surfers competing for the big prize.

The Tow-At is a crowd favourite with spectators privy to phat punts and mad gaffs galore. Utilizing Jet Ski's, competitors will be sling-shot into the waves at speed enabling them to use waves as ramps and attempting and landing tricks not possible normally.

The use of the ski's works not only to the benefit of the surfers but also the spectators who are treated to crazy ass non-stop entertainment in an easy to understand way of doing things. None of this boring "5 turns to the beach" kinda normal contest surfing jazz.

Last year this was the first surfing tow-at event in NZ ever.... we're making history right here! It's a high-energy, fast-paced contest with mad tricks going down like no contest before it on this countries shores!! One not to be missed!

Why Leave

We are excited to announce that Churchill Park Campground is now going to be open until the 4th of January 2010!!!!!!

Just because the back to back carnage between Christmas and New Year has ticked over for another year, and the body is hurting from all sorts of shenanigans', it does not mean you have to leave.......!!! Instead of driving home on a terrible hangover, play it safe, stay for a couple of extra nights and soak up the beautiful East Coast and what this place called Gizzy is all about.

After hitting it hard, why not take the opportunity to chill. We all know that Gizzy may be a rather long road trip, but it's damn worth it - now you can stick around for the long haul at Churchill Park.

Hey! Did you realise that this year, January 1st is a Friday! This means Friday the 1st is a national holiday so no one can go back to work until Monday the 4th anyway! Stoked, that's a few more days up your sleeve to keep your tent pitched.

Plus, for all you dedicated folk who need one last chance to find a hottie or show off your dance moves, there will be a BW After Party on the 1st of Jan at the Jim Beam Sound Shell for the option of a final blow out.

If you are already staying at Churchill you can stay on, if not, switch over to there on the 2nd when the other camps close. Make sure you register now though as space is limited at this park, Visit http://www.bwcampgrounds.co.nz/bookings/ ASAP to secure your spot for the extra nights.

Extra nights at Churchill are just a minuscule sum of $20 per night!

Stay at Gisborne's Baywatch Campground on the 3rd and 4th of January and sample some goodness;

Beach Time

Moko

Surf

Sustainable Coastlines Beach Clean Up

www.sustainablecoastlines.org

International Jazz and Blues Festival

Rere Rock Slide

http://www.aatravel.co.nz/101/MustDo_Rere-Rock-Slide.html

East Cape

Mahia Seaside markets

Steam Train Beach Loop Excursion 2nd 3rd January

Formally known as Con Psy. Formally known as one-half of the award-winning local hip hop group Frontline. Formally known as the next to blow.

Bring these pronouncements forward to the present tense and David Dallas is now known as the most gifted wordsmith New Zealand hip hop has birthed. And the most valued lyricist on Dirty Records' roster is armed with a soon-to-drop solo debut simply titled Something Awesome, an album again set to have other rappers reassess their own rap blueprints.

Early in the piece, label mate P-Money was quick to spot the prodigious talents of the new kid comin' up, recognition that led to Dave's searing verse on 'Not Many - The Remix'. The song heralded the arrival of an untapped rap talent that New Zealand Hip Hop was quick to make room for, elbow room the newcomer lost no time working with.

Four years on from that 16 bar introduction to David Dallas' untapped flow, D.Dot has amassed an impressive history of ticked boxes. Unit-shifting independent album' Check. Tui award for the Best Hip Hop Album' Check. Surgically precise wordplay few can approach' Check.

A freshly minted solo long player can now be added to this list of career achievements. This year, the Artist Formally Known As returns under his government name of David Dallas to deliver Something Awesome, the re-up on a rhyme skill set that hasn't stopped expanding.

DAN AUX

Back in the day was where it all came together for Dan. The hundreds of partys and events, the guest mixes on Triple J's Mix Up & The Club. His weekly editorials and columns in Sydney Streetpress Brag & Revolver and Newcastle's U-turn. His commitment and passion for the music was instrumental in advocating Dan as one of the most talented of Australia's young DJs. Now based in Auckland, New Zealand. Closely tied to Sydney dance label Vacation records as one half of Shopliftas, Dan's time is split between music production & remixes aswell as his weekly radio show on George FM.
When you see Dan Aux behind the decks you know there is some kind of magic happening. You can see the experience supporting artists - Krafty Kuts, Z-Trip, Plump DJs, Freq Nasty, Aquasky, Ltj Bukem, Kid Kenobi, Mylo, Stanton Warriors, Shapeshifter, Kosheen, Pendulum. (The list goes on...) All have been conducive in shaping not only the music Dan plays but the way in which it is presented, in a genre defying fenzy of dexterity and flair. An accomplished scratch DJ and an internationally accliamed producer, Dan can easily lay claim to being the ultimate DJ package when it comes to getting the party started and keeping it going all night long.

MAYA & VANYA

Sisters Maya and Vanya are a dj duo unlike any other.Originally from Croatia, their exotic yet fun and quirky culture, and music encompassing a cross-cultural style, sets them apart from today's other young talent.Their eclectic and fun sets teamed with vast knowledge in music have made them become some of the most in-demand young DJs in NZ, playing their unique blend of upfront Jackin' House, Indie Disco, and Tech-House along with their own special edits/live re-edits and great stage presence to get the dancefloor moving.

The ARC

THE ARC (Paydirt, Scracth 22 and Legal Money Mike) began running a series of parties in the old Silo theatre to fill a gap in Auckland. They brought with them a mix of new club music, old school hip hop, live percussion, grafitti art and skateboarding demos. It began a scene that until then had only existed at house parties, a sweaty, bosterious, legendary free for all.
Running one year strong, THE ARC continue to play in venues around Auckland city, each time making the party their own, and partying under their own banner.
Now with a diverse following and sponsorship from ABC, THE ARC is aiming for the radio waves, and the ears, hearts and minds of all Aucklanders. Look out

State Of Mind (Live)

Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, State of Mind are the duo of Stu Maxwell and Patrick Hawkins. Beginning their careers in 2004 SOM have become notoriously prolific producers with releases on a broad spectrum of labels throughout the dnb scene. To date SOM Music has released artists such as Black Sun Empire, Axiom, Chris Su, Mindscape, Dose and more. In addition to DJing, State of Mind perform via a live show which includes MC Woody from Wellington NZ. In a similar vein to the likes of Daft Punk or the Chemical Brothers, the 'State of Mind Live' experience goes beyond drum and bass, exploring other genres of electronica while playing almost exclusively their own material from past and present.

www.myspace.com/stateofmindnz

The Upbeats

Known collectively as The Upbeats, Jeremy Glenn and Dylan Jones have been writing epic genre-redefining drum and bass together for eleven years. Full-time DJs and producers since early 2004, the duo perform on a regular basis across the globe, run their own recording imprint Non Vogue and have released countless underground hit records on some of the most respected drum and bass labels on the planet. Three classic full-length albums into their career, at the point where most artists begin to stutter - The Upbeats only continue to go from strength to strength, constantly changing the game in 2010 and beyond.

www.theupbeats.co.nz/

Mt Eden Dubstep compromises of Jesse Cooper and Harley Rayner who are based in New Zealand and are quickly emerging as a force to be reckoned with in the local and international drum and bass and dubstep scenes. They started out with a passion for making remixes and over time have developed their own distinctive style, with soulful vocals and massive bass lines.

In the two years since releasing their first tracks on Youtube, Mt Eden Dubstep are breaking barriers and have gained thousands of fans with much critical acclaim from all corners of the globe. In particular, their biggest track on Youtube, "Sierra Leone" (bootleg) has already reached 4.5 million views and is rapidly increasing. At the moment they are doing gigs around New Zealand but are set to head to the US, UK and Europe in the future.

With Jesse and Harley both producing and DJing, you can expect filthy resonating bass lines, stomping drums, eerie vocals and a bit of hip hop flavour - all resulting in something beautiful and uplifting.

Batucada Sound Machine coming to BW

Loosely translated, Batucada means percussive samba jam. Throw in two guitars, bass, keyboard, a slick horn section and one of the Pacific's finest MCs, and you have Batucada Sound Machine. The 10 piece group has evolved from the impromptu "batucada" sessions back in 2003 to become one of NZ's most sought after acts. Their tasty concoction of Brazilian, Cuban and afro-beat rhythms is given a hip hop front courtesy of MC Hazaduz (Che Fu & the Krates) . This kingpin of the rising local hip hop scene lays solid rhymes over the massive samba-reggae percussion while the talented band adds rich pacific soul, reggae and funk flavours.
